SPEAKER_00

Welcome back to Two Divas One Ran, where local news meets local attitude. Oh yeah. Hello, Terry. How are ya? Good. How are you? I'm not happy, Terry. Why? I'm looking out the window and I see snow on the ground.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah. Welcome to winter number eight in the Arctic tundra. That's what I call it. It's the winter that'll never leave. Somebody did not get the memo, which is like, I feel like we've been talking about this forever. Right?

SPEAKER_00

I I mean things have look a lot greener. That's poking through under the white stuff, but I would have been happy with some showers.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. But they say that's what you get for May Long. It's May long, baby. It is May long. No planting potatoes today.

SPEAKER_00

Bring your uh little buds and blooms in. Yeah, as you can see, they are all in. They are, yeah. That's it. Nothing else, Terry? I don't think so.

SPEAKER_01

Do I do I have anything else? I don't in my brain it's percolating, I'm sure it'll come out.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Yeah. Work's going good. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Work's work. How about you? How's your work?

SPEAKER_00

Work's okay. I was in the city for most uh for the last couple weeks, actually. One for a conference and then for training. I dreading going back to work on tomorrow when I open up all my emails, and yeah, that'll be a good day just going through all the emails and and stuff. So as much as I love a long weekend, it's gonna be painful.

SPEAKER_01

I will say I forgot that on Friday I was in Manville for a meeting. Manville, yeah, and we had this lunch by let me get this straight. It's called Something Sweet Bakery. Something something sweet coffee and bakery. It was amazing in Manville. In Manville. So yeah, you know how all of us go to the city now and then and we're like, oh, we gotta stop at Bandere for sausages. Oh, we gotta stop here for this. Stop in Manville to the something sweet coffee and bakery. It was delightful. We had a cream potato soup, which was so nummy. We had chicken Caesar wraps, and then you know, I was thinking, oh, we'll get these little cheesecakes for desserts. And I was just thinking they're gonna be like little squares. Oh no, they were like full on slices. Oh, I ate it all guilt-free. It's great. Excellent. Okay, so there you go.

SPEAKER_00

So it's it's a little cafe, it's not just a bakery per se. You can have like soup and sandwiches and yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And then they also had some picnic tables out in the front of their like we obviously had it delivered because we're having a meeting. Yeah, but um, yeah, rave for sure.

SPEAKER_00

Wow, yeah, I did not know. Good this is good information. I love traveling around uh and finding new hidden little gems to go eat because I am on the road quite a bit and I have eaten at some quaint little places. And if you're ever in Smoky Lake, you gotta go to the Sentex for their chicken tenders and fries.

SPEAKER_01

Oh really? Heaven. Oh, there's also a burger joint in Smoky Lake. I think that's supposed to be pretty good.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, I I know the bakery's really good too there, but the Sentex chicken, man. Sentex chicken.

SPEAKER_01

Not you know, they both start with C, but I'm not sure I would have put them in the same chicken Sentex.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so all these, you know, Derwin's got Derwin pizza.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, they do, and it's delicious. It is. Yeah. Elk Point has a golden loaf bakery, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um wow. Vermilion has delicious. It's I think it's called Delicious Bites. It's a cute little restaurant there, as well as the uh red brick. Red brick.

SPEAKER_01

I was just gonna say red brick, right?

SPEAKER_00

We have the El Point Coffee Club, Bonnieville has caffeinate.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, right. Yeah, all these little things. It must be like lunchtime soon. It must be. So um, we're gonna talk some county and some town stuff and some taxes, county town, and taxes. Yeah, like doesn't that sound riveting? What could possibly go wrong?

SPEAKER_00

I think it kind of goes with the weather.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Hold on to your helmets.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, so what's going on, Terry?

SPEAKER_01

Uh oh, hey, we had uh a real estate property plus realty reached out and said, Hey, I'd like to give you some stats. I saw that. What did they have to tell us, Terry? I thought that was a great idea. So a big thank you to Desiree and Evan here in the town of Elk Point. So currently they have 13 houses for sale. And again, disclaimer, could have changed between when we got the email and that two condos, two houses that are pending, a new listing of four four plexus, and dun dun, there's been two sales in the last 30 days. So things are moving. Sale prices are between you know 250 to 320,000. So, you know, we got a little bit of everything in Elk Point. Low, medium, high. Right?

SPEAKER_00

Quaint. Quaint. Uh, to you know, if you need more room, because maybe you've got a growing family, come to El Point, check it out. Yeah, it's the right place to be. Well, most days.

SPEAKER_01

It's we can always strive to be better. Oh, uh absolutely. Right. If you're not striving, you're well then you're stagnant. Oh, well, that that didn't roll right off the tongue. It didn't. I was thinking strive to stagnant. Yeah, we always gotta do better. Yeah, what do you got on your list for stuff to chat about? Nothing.

SPEAKER_00

What? I'm just yeah, I have been on the road, so I uh I left it all up to you, Terry. Thank you for picking up the ball.

SPEAKER_01

No, it's all good. So on the road, so how are the potholes where you went? Let's dive into my first rant.

SPEAKER_00

Oh uh yeah, potholes not as big as uh some of the ones in El Point.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we just can pile on in ours, so at least you see it coming from a little bit.

SPEAKER_00

You know, maybe what uh needs to happen in El Point, which happened in England, was somebody drew a dick and balls around the uh pothole so that the council would fix them in like bright fluorescent colors. Yeah, that'll do it. That was yeah. I mean, I'm not encouraging vandalism, but I am trying to make a point here that there would be a lot of dick and balls around Elk Point.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh, I don't even know how to respond to that. Trying to keep it together over here. Um, yeah, like I understand 'tis the season, you know, the supposed winter number eight is gonna go away and it exposes all these wonderful potholes. But I don't know. And then you know what really grinded my gears? What? Do you know what creams my corn? No, I'm just kidding. Um, I read a Facebook comment, which really take it for what you got. But oh, I don't think we should fix the potholes because it makes people slow down. Uh well, to me, that was a walker, somebody who just walks everywhere. Don't get hit by the swerving vehicle that's got to swerve from the pothole.

SPEAKER_00

And maybe if you're not familiar with Elk Point and you hit that pothole and you are doing the speed limit, and then your vehicle has a nice little shake and rattle going to it. That's not really uh investing in bringing people to our community.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and it's not even just the potholes at this point. Like we've got projects still sitting on the books, and I don't know, maybe somebody can reach out to us in the next week and a half and tell us why it's not being completed. But Main Street has been dug up for what, two years now? Two parade things. I I call it parade cycles. We don't even call them years anymore. You know, our that's our main drag. That's what we should be, you know, flaunting. And you gotta drive over this patch that hasn't been fixed yet.

SPEAKER_00

And parades are coming up. I mean, Canada Day is only a month and a half away. This is true, yeah. And lots of people come to El Point Canada Day Parade. They do, and the events that you're usually follow that.

SPEAKER_01

I would say hazard to, you know, second to hockey and you know, the riding arena and maybe the theater. That's why they come to El Point is for the parade. Canada. We've got a great Canada Day. There's some axe throwing is gonna happen. Like maybe I gotta get go do that, get out some aggression. I'm with you. Okay, I'm going.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, yeah, so that would be really nice if we completed some projects, spruced up our main street for our parades.

SPEAKER_01

Well, considering the taxes have gone up, and you know, two sure things in life, death and taxes. How much are taxes going up, Terry? Okay, well, let's just remember this is only the municipal side of the taxes. Okay. We're not going to talk about other requisitions and school taxes because that is, you know, that's a separate thing. Elk Point tax going up 2%, Bonneville tax increased 2%, Town of St. Paul tax increased 3.9%. Oh, so I guess they're fixing their potholes is what I read that. Um, no, I'm just kidding.

SPEAKER_00

I'm gonna say, I don't know, I drove on uh St. Paul streets the other day.

SPEAKER_01

And the county of St. Paul, they're holding their own, they're not expected to increase or decrease. But again, remember municipal taxes portion only, not okay.

SPEAKER_00

So where I live in downtown LA, yeah, Lindbergh, Alberta. Woo-hoo. My county portion of tax will not be increasing at this point.

SPEAKER_01

I don't think so. But you'll probably get an increase overall.

SPEAKER_00

Now, what what what else do we pay in our taxes that would cause for me to have an increase?

SPEAKER_01

Well, the government's gotta pay for stuff. So one of those stuff. Which government?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, provincial government. Provincial government.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, your educational taxes are gonna go like some of them are up like nine percent. That's where I read 5.3%. So it's gonna be crazy.

SPEAKER_00

So when we were kind of planning this out, you said you educated me by saying when I pay education tax, doesn't stay for like my Elpoint schools, or in this case, maybe my Heinsburg school, because it's in the county. This goes across the province.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it goes to a big pool. And then they decide how they're gonna spend their money in education. Oh, what schools they're gonna fund, what schools they're gonna retrofit or create, or yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So more likely than not, it's gonna go to Edmonton.

SPEAKER_01

Well, probably the bigger cities, yeah. Or and dare you say the word charter schools.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I was just gonna say that because what is that? Uh in Innisf what's West of Manville. Is that Innisf Innisfree? Innisfree?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Because they're closing their school.

SPEAKER_01

So I think is Rochester too.

SPEAKER_00

So uh, but somebody said something about a charter school.

SPEAKER_01

Oh. Now I don't know if that's true.

SPEAKER_00

Why a chartered school would come to a rural that small a town, but you never know. Maybe because people don't want to bust their kids. Yeah, maybe. I don't know. I that is just something I I heard. Now, that's doesn't mean it's true. Uh so if somebody does know, please send in to Two Divas One Rant. You can find us on uh Facebook, Instagram, or to divas onerant at gmail.com.

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

So uh so back to to the education tax that goes to everywhere, but our schools.

SPEAKER_01

And it's a tax whether you've got a kid in school or not, right? Right. So we all pay for it because potentially more educated people are going to help us in the long run.

SPEAKER_00

Right. And I don't mind paying tax, education tax. I mean, my kids are done school, but I would like to see people move into L Point and use our school. Uh, you know, I think I said that in one episode where we used to have two classrooms for every grade. We're down to I think it's almost every grade has just one class.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And we have two schools.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's the challenge of rural, right? We don't always fill all, but then you'll have some years where you have lots, right? And then some years you don't.

SPEAKER_00

So the projection has been downwards for a while. So we have a K to 6 school, Elp uh, L Point Elementary, and then across the street, we have FG Miller Junior Senior High School, grade seven to grade 12. So if the population is going down and we're paying taxes for two schools, yeah. I dare I say it. I don't want to say it, but what economically or fiscally responsibly be to combine the two schools?

SPEAKER_01

Right. I think we also have a bigger issue, too, if you want to go crazy, that the average um babies are like 0.4. How that works out, I don't know. What do you mean? Expect like we got the generations, the next two generations not having kids. Uh so to your point, maybe we'll need less putting all this money into schools where we have the people. What are we doing where we don't have the people?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it'll all catch up to itself and it will be like I mean, I went to school in Derwent. Uh when I started, it was grade one to grade twelve. And then I want to say when I was in grade two, that's when the bus came to take the grade 10 to 12 to Myrnham. And eventually decline in enrollment, population. Durwent school closed, it became a blind factory. Oh, yeah, right. Yeah, now it's closed completely. Uh, that's never good for a town when a school closes. And I do and I don't want to see that for L Point. I think L Point has a lot to offer. And I would love to see it filled up.

SPEAKER_01

Well, and I think that's why we fought for the outreach school too a few years ago, right? Yeah. The need to have that alternate education as well is important.

SPEAKER_00

I I just think we need to do something uh to bring people here, because then I mean, if we are, you know, that means then we lose teachers. And if we lose teachers, then they, you know, the provincial government might say, Do you really need a hospital?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, let's not go down that control today. I don't want okay, we won't.

SPEAKER_00

But let's try and think springy. Oh, okay. Oh, yeah, because it is the long weekend. Monday, holiday Monday, Victoria Day, Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Which are you doing anything special for long weekend? No.

SPEAKER_00

No planting potatoes.

SPEAKER_01

Nope.

SPEAKER_00

Even if the weather was nice, Roger said no garden, you have no time. Well, you do travel a lot.

SPEAKER_01

I do, but I love new potatoes. Well, there's you go to the store. It's not the same.

SPEAKER_00

No. I I have a really good friend. Oh, good. They supply you, they hook you up. Well, I'm I'm hoping she will. I mean, she doesn't know it yet. Step one. Uh, but yeah. So, I mean, it is the long weekend Monday, so it's the kickoff to summer usually. Right? It's that kickoff to, you know, burnout boundaries and barbecue.

SPEAKER_01

Barbecue. Okay, burnout. Let's talk about that for a bit, right? Who's got burnout this time of the year?

SPEAKER_00

Me. Me. Right? I mean, it's been a long winter and I, you know, it's that work thing all the time. Like, what else do you gotta do? I do a little extra work or all of that.

SPEAKER_01

And now it's like and I think it's even outside going from you know, that small window of time where it goes from white, it's still light out there, to brown to green, right?

SPEAKER_00

Like that blah time. Yeah. And the sun is out longer, so it it, you know, you you want to get home and you want to get outside. And, you know, I love cutting grass. I love sitting on the lawnmower and cutting grass. I love the smell of fresh cut grass. Nice. Right. So that's part of your work-life balance. That's right. And that's that's part of that boundaries, right? It's it's nice out. I've given you a lot of time during the winter months, the long winter that will never end. Right. Um, and now I I want to just, yeah. Hey, 4:30 is cut-off time. I'm going home.

SPEAKER_01

430 wanna money here.

SPEAKER_00

And then barbecue.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it is the barbecue season.

SPEAKER_00

I know. For Mother's Day, we were barbecuing, and I was like, Oh, I know what to get, Roger, for Father's Day. A new barbecue? A new barbecue. Don't tell him.

SPEAKER_01

Would it be like a smoker barbecue or just a regular?

SPEAKER_00

I think just a regular barbecue. I don't I don't like a lot of heavy smoke flavor in my barbecue. What's your favorite thing to barbecue? Ribs. Oh, really?

SPEAKER_01

Yes. That's Dan's favorite. He makes ribs like almost weekly, not gonna lie.

SPEAKER_00

Oh no, we don't have it weekly, maybe every couple of months.

SPEAKER_01

No. We he and he tries different recipes. He does very good. But um, yeah, do you take the membrane off the back of the ribs? Yes, okay, good. See, there are other people like that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. What do you like? What's your favorite barbecue thing?

SPEAKER_01

Um, I like to try different things, but yeah, probably good juicy hamburger or chicken.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. That's yeah, again, it must be close to lunchtime because here we go, talking about the food. Yeah. And you know, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Just getting out at the lake lot and having barbecue and yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, and that's the important back to that boundaries and burnout. I'm tired of cooking, like the same thing. Like we do eat ribs, but it's like ribs and sauerkraut. Right. And, you know, casseroles. Well, now it's like barbecue and a salad.

SPEAKER_01

Salad? Ooh, the macaroni salad comes out. I make a lot of macaroni salad in the summer.

SPEAKER_00

Do you make a good macaroni salad?

SPEAKER_01

Well, I try and make different ones. Dill pickle, macaroni cheese salad.

SPEAKER_00

I'm in. Yep. I'm in, I which reminds me. I'll give you the I have a tray of cabbage rolls for you.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yes. Excellent.

SPEAKER_00

And then, yeah, take some you'll you'll in a macaroni salad. They don't make macaroni salad. I yeah, I I've tried. Don't get me wrong, I've tried. It's the balance in the dressing.

unknown

Oh.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. I just I'll never make so this is a fun thing in my house because we'll have a great meal, and Owen or Dan will be like, the sad thing is we'll never have it again. Never duplicated. Oh, I never follow a recipe. And he's like, Oh, this is great. What did you do? I'm like, don't know. A di a dash of this, a sprinkle of that. Yeah. I just said, remember, it's just made with my love. That's what makes it taste so great.

SPEAKER_00

And I really loved you today, so that's why it tastes so good. Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_01

And I just find a macaroni salad is easy to take. Like, you know, if you're going somewhere for a potluck or you're going somewhere, easy to whip up and take. Nice. Yeah. And most people aren't allergic, but then I guess there's the gluten people. And I do have one girlfriend who's allergic to lemon. Well, I put lemon in everything, so it's very hard. But she's worth it. So there you go. I'll put off a little to the side and make sure I don't put any lemon in it.

SPEAKER_00

Nice. Yeah. Nice. Okay. What do you got over there? What's on your list, my my

SPEAKER_01

Well, I did uh take another kick at the cat to listen to some council meetings this past week.

SPEAKER_00

Good for you. I did not.

SPEAKER_01

So I tried. What did you learn? Okay, biggest thing, biggest news for Elk Point, town of Elk Point, new garbage contract came through. So E360 is now doing the entire town. So we used to, I think half the town was on a Wednesday and half was on a Thursday. Entire town is gonna be on Wednesday now. And you have to have your garbage bin out by 7 a.m.

SPEAKER_00

So did they not have somebody from the town an employee who did garbage pickup? So what's no idea?

SPEAKER_01

Oh I'm guessing they're on to bigger, better things.

SPEAKER_00

Or found or restructured and put somewhere else. I'm hoping. Yeah, hopefully that's what happened. But so now we're contracting somebody to come in and pick up our garbage.

SPEAKER_01

I think it makes more sense than to have our own truck that was aging out, anyways. And for what, two days a week? So, you know, I'm pretty sure they probably got other work for hey, maybe they get on the potholes. Just saying. Um other thing that I thought was interesting was you know, the MD Foundation is um needing money from all their players for their um senior housing renovations.

SPEAKER_00

So MD Foundation, that's out of St. Paul. Am I correct? There, they do housing, they also do like low-income housing and housing for seniors, like uh not necessarily they do the lodge, but there's also those adult living like Fort George and Buckingham Place in El Point.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah. Any assisted, yeah. They they are the head of that. And then all these town of St. Paul, County of St. Paul, town of Elk Point pay into that to have that, right?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, so we're they're waiting for their so MDA Foundation is waiting for these people to give them some money that they they need.

SPEAKER_01

And in true Elk Point fashion, we're blast. Everybody else is paid, but everybody else, also, I shouldn't say everybody, because I don't know about the town of St. Paul, but the county and the town of Elk Point ran into a problem with uh debenture. So usually they just get a loan through the debenture and then pay it and whatever. But um apparently the government changed their you know criteria on that, so all the debentures were denied to everyone. So good thing, yeah, good thing county and town have some reserves. So they paid the loan out of their reserves in the meantime until they get this loan stuff figured out, which they assured the people that they would. So stay tuned on that. But um, yeah, so I guess that's exactly why you have some reserves. So um, also not the greatest audio. I have to agree with you. You you mentioned that before, and it was really hard. I only made it halfway through, and I had to turn off because it's hard to follow, right? Totally hard to follow. And you have and this has always been a town of Elk Point thing. The CAO runs a show, not really like the mayor doesn't really they chair the meeting, but they don't seem to run it, and so you've got the CAO trying to talk over here and not totally confident, and then you got an EA yelling from behind where from everybody where they sit and it's cutting in and out, and it was just it was too much.

SPEAKER_00

And the EA we're talking the executive assistant, correct?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, the one that does the computer thing and takes the minutes and stuff, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, that's weird because you from any board I've sat on and any organization I've been with, it is the chair person who chairs the meeting, which in this case should be the mayor.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and you don't talk until you're called upon, right? Like if you watch any other town or county, I don't know why elk points backwards, but they always have been. Like even when I sat on there, they did it. When I questioned it, then they didn't like it. So we just continue on with life. But you watch other ones, they don't. The CAO and any other supporting cast is how I like to say it. Right. Just sit and wait till they're called upon.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_01

And it's the chair recognizes yeah, if they need more information, that's when they should be reaching out and saying, Hey, can you explain this more? Because we've all read our minutes here. Well, you should all read our agenda, apparently. And uh, we've got further questions, right? Right, but honestly, watch others. It's not just me, it's not uh yeah. Yeah, and then the county, county of St. Paul.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, what's happening in there? Lovely county.

SPEAKER_01

Well, the big debate on the curling rink of Elk Point, because Elk Point's gonna go after some grant funding for a plant, I think, because they need a new plant. And uh they are run by a great bunch of volunteers that keep that curling rink limping along. And so they did ask the town for some insurance money, and they did ask the county to uh let our support for their grant and maybe some matching funds if that's in the works down the road, if they're successful. And um, yeah, but you know what was encouraging about that listening to that? Here's a society, a group of volunteers who got their poop in a group. They brought everything and they even said, Hey, look, we have our matching funds. We are prepared to pull the pin and we can get this done. We just need your support and your help. Nice. Often you have lots of nonprofits like you don't have their their portion of it, right? So good on them. Good job.

SPEAKER_00

You know, many, many years ago, and I'm gonna say decades ago, there was an L Point resident who often thought our curling rink and our arena should be one big building. Yeah. And I thought that was a pretty good idea because I know when the kids were in school and you know, learning about curling, they spent half their period walking down or walking back up, yeah, and not a lot of time on the ice. And it would have been nice if it was right there by the by the arena, yeah, all together.

SPEAKER_01

When you go to other rural uh, you know, towns and county or towns and villages, some of them have separate, some of them are together. So it's really kind of a mishmash.

SPEAKER_00

I just thought though, that could have been good. You could have built on and maybe had like a you know, pickleball courts in there and you know, maybe expanded on it to make it like a a regional center of some sort where they had things in there. But that was somebody thinking uh way ahead of way ahead of their time. Yes, but anyways, good for the for our curling rink. It is very active curling rink, and I'd love to see it continue.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I agree. The other thing uh County of St. Paul talked about was uh the Allied Arts. They wanted a gravel request because they're down to like bare minimum in their front area. Oh yeah. And um I was just surprised that the Allied Arts is a shared building between the town and the county. Is it really? Yeah. Okay, yeah. And um there was a lot of conversation of yeah, uncertainty.

SPEAKER_00

So you mean uncertainty about the gravel request or who's responsible for what and who does this?

SPEAKER_01

And oh, are we you know are we being fair about what's being asked and yada yada? But the motion was perfect, it was bang on. County's gonna deliver the gravel, town, you can spread it. I thought that was pretty fair.

SPEAKER_00

Wow, how long did it take to get to that motion? Longer than it needed. Really? Yeah, it fascinates me. Like I don't know who gets to like when you take on this venture together, do you guys not sit down and say, okay, we're gonna do this and you're gonna do that? Or or do they, or they just somebody's lost those documents along the way somewhere?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that might be part of it for sure. And it might be just the request too. Who knows? It hasn't been there for a long time, but yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Nice, okay. Well, way, way to go, county. Uh, bringing in some gravel to the Allied Arts. Yep. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Um, last but not least for the county. So, you know how we've always said, you know, if we get something wrong or we need more clarification, reach out to us. Absolutely. Yeah. So somebody did reach out to me. Excellent. Because they may or may not have liked how I worded the county, uh denied the request for uh for the setback of the wind turbines.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yes. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

So I hey, great. Thanks for reaching out. I will dive deeper into that, which of course I did. Way to go, Terry. All right, because I like that stuff. Bring that shit on. Um so the ask was actually a 10 kilometer setback. And that's what was not approved, is the county is like going, no, we're gonna go with the Alberta government and what and their 1.6 kilometer setback, and we feel that that's you know, reasonable. Okay. So yeah. So it's funny how sometimes you get the Facebook warriors that are on there going, Oh, this was denied, or da-da-da-da. But sometimes you need to know what the original ask was.

SPEAKER_00

That's right. And they are not warriors, they're trolls, they're keyboard trolls. Okay, yes. Because a warrior will face you face to face, not hide behind a screen and think that they, you know, they can chat GPT how to uh write something and put it on there.

SPEAKER_01

Chat GPT is really good at posters, though. I'm not gonna lie. But you've got to read it. It's not always true. That's right. Yeah. I think chat GPT purposely like changes information on your poster just to see if you did actually read it. Could be. Yeah. Could be. Anyways, that's a whole nother thing. That's a whole nother rant. So, yeah, that's it for me. That's really the highlights that came out of the the two council meetings. And then I just kind of watch the other stuff with with Bonnieville and in town of St. Paul.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Well, there you go. Thank you for that, Terry. Keeping us informed. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And uh, do you you got some like community shout-outs or some events for this this uh you want to tell us what's happening for events? Because I feel like I've talked a lot. Yeah, but you've done a good job. Oh, thanks.

SPEAKER_00

We got some events going on. So on Sunday, May 24th, it's the plant exchange at the Further Ed building, 1 to 3 p.m. And then Tuesday, May 26th is the Greater Lakeland Rural Crime Watch meeting, 7 p.m. at the Elk Point Senior Center.

SPEAKER_01

Are you part of that? I am not. You haven't paid your 10 bucks? I no. Are you a part? No, you yeah, yeah, for our lot. Oh, right. Yes. If you're out here in the county, do you go to those meetings? I did for a bit. And they're great. They're good information, but there's just somebody there that okay. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

All right. I mean, maybe I should go check it out. Thursday, May 28th. It's the newcomer support event at Laverne at Laverne Wilson uh public library in Elk Point at 9 30 a.m.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Nice.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And then Friday and Saturday, May 29th or 30th, it's the Elk Point Dinner Theater presents. Sweet Surrender starts at 6:30 p.m. and it's $50 a ticket. Nice. And with that ticket, there it's dinner and a show, people. Dinner and a show. And uh the food is usually very good. I I've never had an issue with the food when I've gone. And I've I'm always surprised when I go and go, my God, these guys really do put on a good show. Yeah. And I don't know why I think that after going for I don't know how many years.

SPEAKER_01

They really do.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And you know, it's not something I I couldn't go up there and do it. So I always appreciate when somebody can do something I can't. Right. And do it so well.

SPEAKER_00

And then the following uh on Sunday, May 31st, they also have uh Elping Dinner Theater. Yes. No, it says, Oh, they present at 6 30 p.m., but it's uh $45. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Well, maybe because it's Sunday.

SPEAKER_00

Maybe. So uh I recommend you guys get out there, support them. It's usually, like I said, great food and great great performances. Yeah, absolutely. So, but if anybody has an event coming up, remember we drop every two weeks. Yep. So get us your information. We will gladly share it on our podcast.

SPEAKER_01

We will gladly accept any sponsorships. Sponsorship. Okay, so here's the deal. What's the deal? I've had lots of people say, You guys really need to do weekly. I can never remember the second Monday. Okay, well, it's May long, so start from there. Number two, if you want us to go weekly, we need sponsors. We need we need money. That's right. Yeah. Or goods or goods.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, but also if you like and subscribe wherever you get your podcast, you'll get a notification when ding, ding, podcast has dropped.

SPEAKER_01

Podcast has dropped. And not gonna lie, you've been rocking the social media with all your posts. Oh, well, thank you. Like when how do people not know it's dropping?

SPEAKER_00

I you know what? People gotta like and then share it. Yeah. Let's spread the word. Spread the word. Though I kind of fell back a bit this week on um, because I had no idea what we were talking about. We I I missed a couple of meetings. There are no planning meetings. Well, sometimes at our um our little side club.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, our our side club. We yeah, we get some ideas.

SPEAKER_00

You know, or at least touch base of uh when are we, you know, what got any ideas? What's happening? And I haven't been around, and you picked up the ball.

SPEAKER_01

And well, you know, I just didn't want to talk about the opening of her moose or whatever, like and the China US related. Like, come on, it's so I hate mainstream media. I can't even do it anymore. It's the same stuff, right? Yeah, and we all know gas prices are up still. Oh, and there is a new announcement about electrification. Get a grip. Electrification. Oh, yeah. Carney was on there the other day. He's gonna electrify all of Canada. We gotta do infrastructure, we gotta do this. We got oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

Like, are we talking electric vehicles? Because didn't Honda Honda pull out of that and do lots of things, but that's just the tip.

SPEAKER_01

We gotta change all propane. I think he said his words were we're gonna change propane, the dependency on propane and gas to electricity. We're gonna start just using electricity more, but we don't have the grid or the infrastructure to do that. But we're gonna get all that. Okay. Sorry.

SPEAKER_00

You said propane, and all I could think was propane and propane accessories. Barbecue season. Are you telling me I'm gonna have an electric barbecue? I don't think so. Did they even create such a thing? They used to be when I lived in Red Deer decades ago. Uh, we couldn't have gas barbecues on our balconies. I lived in an apartment. Oh, yeah. So I had an electric one. It's not the same.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's kind of going from like those coals to remember those old coals? Like in a hibachi or something. Are you talking of like one of those little ones? Yeah, where they all turned white and then you knew it was time to cook or something. Yeah. Then to natural gas, then to propane. Yeah. Just stop fixing things that aren't broke, right? Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, that always gets me back onto the train tracks here. For the disclaimer? No, for the for the uh, you know, they wanted electrify us, but the train tracks. Yeah, they took out all the trains, tracks, right? And we gotta sh, you know, transport everything. But that's a that's a that's a whole different rant.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Are we going to the disclaimer?

SPEAKER_01

Is it that time? Are you ready for that? Yeah, it is. Just like that, bang, it goes fast.

SPEAKER_00

Right? Holy. Okay. Well, two divas one rant is all about real conversation from our point of view. Everything we talk about reflects our own opinions, experiences, and interpretations. Exactly. That's right, train tracks. Just saying. Stop. I gotta get through this. Okay. Of what's happening in our town, our county, and beyond. We're not claiming to have every detail. We didn't have every detail about the um wind turbines, and thankfully, our listener educated us. Yes. Thank you. Right? Uh, every detail or the full story, we're reacting to what we see, what we hear, and what affects our community. We're here to spark discussion, not present ourselves as experts, though sometimes we are experts.

SPEAKER_01

Expert in my own mind.

SPEAKER_00

What works for me. Yeah. If we miss something, get something wrong, or there's more to the story, we genuinely welcome being corrected or educated. Community insight makes the conversation better, and we're always open to learning from the people who live it.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Oh, before I forget, Roger has not seen the R.

SPEAKER_01

I cannot believe it. Roger, what is going on? We need to see the R. Like hockey's almost over. Football's gonna start on Monday when we drop this episode. You gotta see the R, buddy. Come on. I'm not hiding it. You should put you should just put like one letter for his name for like each month until he clues in. Why do you have an urge? It's a rogue. See if he notices then. Uh too funny. Um, okay. Uh the other thing I was thinking of with your boundaries and barbecue and what was the other one? Burnout.

SPEAKER_00

Burnout. Oh, yeah. Oh, that's not also for you know the youngsters to doing burnouts on the road.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Do them right by the potholes, make them bigger, and then we can put like some kind of like scenery in them. Grow trees in them, maybe. Uh, golf courses are open.

unknown

Yeah. Are they? Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I know the Elk Points uh has struggled a little bit, but I think they were hoping to get open this weekend. So what do you mean by struggle? Well, I think they were waiting for a piece of equipment for their kitchen area or something. Um, but I think that is also a great place to go for food in this yeah, they have like that Thunder Crunch burger. Yes, so good. Oh, yeah. We should do like a four a food tour day.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, Sentex chicken. Here we go. Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, can we put that on the bottom of the list?

SPEAKER_00

Well, we could. Okay, but we could go out to the we could maybe do a live podcast from the uh golf course while we're having our thunder kit the Thunder Crunch Chicken Burger.

SPEAKER_01

That's a great idea, actually. Let's hope that there's one day of good weather that we could try and do that. I would love that. Or we're totally open to go to your events, so you know, call us. We will be uh if it works, we'll do our podcast from your live event.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god, we have so many great things that happen in our community and around. I would love to go out to those things and do that. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So Elk Point, County of St. Paul, any area in and around there within a radius. Happy to drive and Durwin's having a big car show coming up sometimes here in June. Yeah, car show on Elk Point, June 2nd, with the chili kick off uh cook-off. See, we could perhaps be at one of those or both events. The fish derbies happening in June in uh Bonneville, hosted by the Elk Point Lions. Lots of things. We go to the trout pond and do something.

SPEAKER_00

You know, I have never been to the trout pond. Are you kidding me right now? Really?

SPEAKER_01

I haven't maybe we just got a bunch of more fish there delivered last week.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, maybe that's something we do our next podcast from is from the trout pond pond. Providing Mother Nature and Old Man Winter have finally either decided to break up break up for good. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe. Okay, okay. Well, that's this has been great. As always. As always, love it, love it. Thanks for still liking me at this point. Haven't kicked me out of the crew. Oh, too funny. Well, this is it. This is two divas, one rant, where local news meets meets local attitude. Oh, yeah.
